“Get a gig, get a gig, I gotta get a gig!”

If you are an entertainer trying to find an audience, get paid, and share your passion with the world, you may have said those words.

I’ve been a professional magician since 1999, and even I occasionally still find myself thinking that exact thing. What I didn’t know when I decided to become an entertainer all those years ago is that finding people to hire you, and more importantly - pay you, is more business than art.

Even though I became an entertainer for the purest of reasons - to give people an escape from the real world through amazement, laughter, and fun - what I didn’t know about the business side of show business, hurt me.

I struggled for years trying to fill my calendar with bookings that fulfilled me creatively and also allowed me to pay my bills and make some money.

Because I know so many other entertainers with similar stories, I’ve decided to share some of the hard-won knowledge that took years to learn and develop into a business.

One of the most important things I found was that entertainers - magicians, jugglers, musicians, ventriloquists, bands, etc - weren’t doing the one thing that would help them the most. They weren’t mentally putting themselves in the place of the person hiring and asking why this person is looking for entertainment.

So, if you are wondering how to “get a gig”, I’m starting a series of blog articles that I will release on Thursdays that share one tip that I learned from my time as Entertainment Director of House of Cards and as a booking agent for numerous national and international tours.

If these tips are popular, I’ll release more of them. If they don’t get much response, I’ll share four or five and then find something else to blog about.

So, let’s start now. Do you find this topic of interest to you? Do you have a burning question to ask someone who has booked talent for entertainment venues and for tours?

Make a comment in the comment box below and tell me. You can tell me what you want to learn, you can tell me this is a waste of time, you can ask me questions. It’s all fair game.
